Gatsby gets so many phone calls to talk about business outside of the Egg. This says that even though he appears to be a very laied back man he is really acctruly hard working. And it also says that he is a very important man in society and their are many people depending on his opinion.
It seems to me that Gatsby is a very popular man. I do not know enough about Gatsby and his job to make an assumption that the calls are related to his job. I believe that the people calling are ones who are calling about the parties that Gatsby throws.
