How did Fitzgerald use weather to reflect the mood of the story?
Fitzgerald made weather an important element in the Great Gatsby. Weather seems to bring out certain emotions in characters. It also sets a certain mood and tone for specific scenes. A perfect example is the scene where Gatsby and Daisy meet for the first time in years. It is pouring out and their meet is quite awkward. Then, the rain stops and the sun comes out, meaning that their love comes out and that they are now comfortable around each other. Weather is an important element for emotions in certain scenes and because Fitzgerald included this in the novel, he is successful.
Fitzgerald uses weather to reveal the mood by making weather directly correlate with the emotions and situations of the story. For example the part of the novel when Daisy and Gatsby are reunited has drastic weather changes to match the change in mood. When they fort meet it is pouring. At this point there is a very awkward feel. But after a while almost simultaneously the sun comes out and their love for each other was found again. Another meeting that was coupled with severe weather conditions was the one between Tom and Gatsby. The day of this encounter was hotter than any other. the extreme temperature accompanied the high tension between the two suspecting men. Gatsby even tries to ignore the seasons when he takes a swim in his pool on the first day of fall. Weather is a significant factor in the story wether is promotes sadness, joy, depression, or any emotion.
In the book, Fitzgerald created the weather to emphizize the plot that was taking place. For example the summertime when the parties are always hot and warm which represents the mood and pace in which things were going. There were a lot of things happening and things were starting to get hot. Like when Jordan found out about Gatsby being in love with DAisy. ALso, in the fall things started to get cold and heartless when Daisy hit Myrtle and never stopped. This was a perfect example of the way Fitzgerald incorporated the weather into the book.
Fitzgerald used weather to portray moods in the story. For example on the day when Daisy and Gatsby first saw eachother again, whe nthey were just looking at eachother in sadness and also in amazement, it was raining. Then when they start talking and and they go over to Gatsby's house, Daisy is amazed by his house and all of Gatsby's beautiful things. When we start to feel the happiness between Daisy and Gatsby the rain clears up, and the sun comes out again. When the mood was melancholy, it was rainy, and when the mood began to be happy, the sun came out.
Fitzgerald used the weather as a key point in the novel because most of his parties were hosted outside, everything was very free and open which made it inviting for anyone. It was summertime and everyone was having a good time. ALso when he meets Daisy he is upset and worried, but once that awkward stage is gone, it is sunny and they get past all of those moments that they have been anxious about.
Fitzgerald's way of describing the weather brought certain scences into play. For example before it started to get cold, gatsby explained how he wanted to swim much more now. Also the weather portrays a mood of awkwardness and then happiness when Gatsby and daisy are reunited. The awkwardness first starts with rain but as time continues the sun comes out. This description makes the reader use imagery so they feel as though they are in the scence as well
The weather directly relates to the mood of the events that are happening. During events that are bad or uncomfortable it tends to be raining. One example is when Daisy and Gastby are reunited it is raining, then once they start to feel more comfortable it starts to stop raining. So clear weather tends to indicate good things. At then end of the novel when Gatsby has died It is raining and before the novel ends it has yet to stop so in a way the weather is saying that things are worse now then before.
Weather brang out emotions and actions of the characters. When it rained out it was usually due to awkward or sad situations. For example when Daisy and Gatsby meet at Nicks house it is raining, but once they talked it all out and the awkwardness was over the sun came out. When it was sunny and warm out everyone was happy and having a good time. Also this was when Gatsby would throw his parties.
Weather not only reflects the mood of the story as a whole, but it also reflects the mood of the characters as well. When the characters lives are changing; so are the seasons. Just at the right times there seems to be rain or the temerature seems to be going through the roof. Knowing the weather really helps convey the story. It helps the reader feel as if they were in the room with Daisy and Gatsby when they first met after years. Swimming in fall, or even in a luxurious hotel room when it feels like its 100 degrees outside.
The weather and mood directly mirror each other. Rain sets a gloomy mood, and the bright and sunny weather creates a glorious and luxurious feel as depicted when Nick was first introduced to Daisy’s house and when Daisy first saw Gatsby's house. Also, in the final chapters the hostility rose with the temperature.
Fitzgerald usues the weather to reflect the mood of the story to show how people were acting and the way that people felt towards different things. For the times in the book when it was raining, the characters moods seemed to be sad or depressed. And when it was sunny out, the character's moods seemed to be happier or easy going.
Fitzgerald made weather an important element in the Great Gatsby. Weather brings out the emotions in the characters. The rain makes the characters sad.The sun makes the characters fill up with exuberance. Its the constant description of moods.
Weather plays a pretty significant role in the story. Most of the Great Gatsby takes place in the summer. The hot New York weather plays an impact on what the characters can and cannot do. Since the weather is so hot, the characters just lay around most of the time during the day. I do not blame them. The cool summer nights also set up the perfect times for the great parties that Gatsby is notorious for throwing.
Fitzgerald used weather as an important element in THe Great Gatsby. It portrays the mood of the story at times. When tensions are high the temp is as well. When love is in the air so is the sun. Other situations occur as well. But Fitzgerald conveys the mood and stiuations of the novel through the weather.
Fitzgerald directly connects the weather with the emotions of the characters. An example is when Gatsby comes over to Nick's house and it is pouring out. I believe Fitzgerald had the rain in there to show Gatsby was very nervous but anxious about meeting Daisy.
Fitzgerald uses weather in a few key encounters. First when Gatsby and Daisy are reunited it is raining cats and dogs. Both characters seem to have no idea as to what to do. Once Nick says it has stopped raining Gatsby and Daisy come back to life. During summer and all of the parties, relationships were really upside down. Daisy and Tom having affairs, Myrtle having an affair also. Once the fall seasons come you dont hear much about the scandolous actions of the characters anymore.
Gatsby uses weather in many scenes, but the scene that stuck out to me the most was when Nick invites Gatsby and Daisy over. While it is raining, Gatsby and Daisy sre very awkward and don't know what to do. When it becomes sunny however, the two start to talk and think back to the good old days.
Weather played a big role in the Great Gatsby. He uses the weather to stand for the emotion and feeling in that particular scene that he describes it. For example if there was fighting going on or someone was upset it might be raining or storming out. But if it is a pleasant scene in the book r things are going well it will be sunny and gorgeous out.
In the Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald uses the weather to show the characters emotions in certain scenes. Such as when it was raining and it showed that there was saddness being showed in that scene and when it cleared up, they were happier. This happens through out the book and the weather shows thier emotion in pretty much every scene.
