At the first meeting Nick is not quite sure what to make of Jay Gatsby. After a while, though, he begins to like him. He finds him a a pleasent, calm man. If anything he is facinated of Gatsby. He is not sure why Gatsby prefers watching the party insteaad of joining in.

After Nick meets Gatsby, he is "pleasantly surprised" as josh said. Gatsby is not what Nick expected and he wonderes why Gatsby enjoys watching his parties rather than joining them. Nick finds Gatsby very calm and polite and he becomes very fond of him.

After Nick meets Gasby, he says he is "pleasantly suprised". He says this because he was truly suprised that Gatsby was actually a nice, pleasant person to be around. He likes to be around Gatsby and over time grows more fond of him. He believes Gatsby is a man of mystery because he doesn't like to go to his own parties, he is bothing like the people say he is like, and many other reasons as well.

After meeting Gatsby, Nick finds himself becoming even more fascinated with him. He likes him, thinking he is a nice and kind person, but is curious to why he does not join the party, but chooses to watch alone.

Nick finds out that Gatsby is not the man that he thought he was. He discovered that Gatsby was a polite and very welcoming person. He treated Nick very politely and curtiously. What probably puzzled Nick the most was why Gatsby kept to himself at his own party. He did not even leave his house.

To Nicks surprise, he finds Gatsby to be a very generous and pleasant man, rather than unwelcoming and rude. Because of his personality, Nick wonders why Gatsby does not join his guests.

After meeting Gatsby Nick's opinion of him changes greatly. From what he has been told Gatsby was a person that was a little off or seemed like he would be mean. But he is "pleasantly surprised to find that Gatsby is almost the opposite of the stories he has been told, he is actually a calm, kind, and generous person. He avoids his own parties since he is more independent then most people.

After Nick meets Gatsby he is shocked by how nice and how average he is. He is also confused because Gatsby has a very low key personality which makes him come off as a mysterious character.
